About BIC
BIC (Book Industry Communication) is an independent organisation
sponsored and part-funded by the Publishers' Association, Booksellers'
Association, the Chartered Institute of Library and Information
Professionals, and the British Library to promote increased efficiency in
the book and serials supply chain - physical and electronic - through the
application of standard processes and procedures and e-commerce.
One of BIC's primary areas of activity is supporting the electronic delivery
of product information through the supply chain. It was responsible for
bringing together data aggregators (e.g. BookData), booksellers and
publishers to create the BIC Basic standards governing the timeliness
and accuracy of product information available to the trade and, more
recently, has played a prominent part in developing and promoting ONIX,
the industry standard for the transmission of product data.
